(1928-) Italian conservative politician, leader of the Christian Democratic Party (DC) from 1982, prime minister 1988–90. He entered the chamber of deputies 1963 and held a number of ministerial posts in the 1970s before becoming DC secretary general. In 1993 he resigned as head of a commission on parliamentary reform, and was subsequently under investigation for extortion in connection with misuse of government aid.
